Leading with the body

Leading with the body

In our new Brittle Anxious Non-linear and Incomprehensible (BANI) world, leaders are facing unprecedented challenges, making professional support such as coaching crucial to their growth.

To help leaders navigate this ever-changing environment and support others, a new approach is required, one that taps into both mental and bodily intelligence to find optimal and sustainable solutions.

Leaders often find themselves heavily focused on rationalizing and intellectualizing challenges, staying predominantly in their heads. By supporting them to access the intelligence of the body with the help of simple techniques, they can unlock new perspectives, navigate strong emotions more easily, and access their intuition.

When using the somatic approach, the coach creates the space for the client to see their situation from a different perspective in space and in time. This helps them gain faster awareness of their positioning in relation to their goal and discover alternative actions to reach it, fostering creativity and effective problem-solving.

As a result of using this holistic approach, leaders can discover innovative solutions and move forward with confidence.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand why and when to use somatic practices while working with leaders
  • Learn how to put in practice 3 somatic exercises (demo included) that tap into different kind of intelligences
  • Practice presence and holistic listening skills with peers

The workshop is intended for leaders, coaches, trainers, facilitators and HR professionals working with leaders.

ICF Competencies:

4.2. By presenting the somatic exercises as an option for the coaching process without enforcing them, the coach
demonstrates respect for the client’s identity, perceptions, style and language and adapts one’s coaching to the client.

4.5. As the exercises presented are somatic and focused on what the client feels, the coach supports the client’s
expression of feelings, perceptions, concerns, beliefs and suggestions.

5.5. By offering the exercises and letting them unfold as they come to the client, the coach demonstrates they are comfortable working in a space of not knowing.

5.6. By presenting and being present during the exercises the coach creates space for silence, pause or reflection.

6.1. During one of the exercises, by representing persons, feelings or options through objects, the participants will learn
how to consider the client’s context, identity, environment, experiences, values and beliefs to enhance understanding of
what the client is communicating.

7.4. The exercises presented during the workshop are designed to help the client explore beyond current thinking as
they are inviting them to view the presented situation from a different point in their lives.

7.9. Through the practical activities, the participants will learn how to invite the client to generate ideas about how
they can move forward and what they are willing or able to do

7.10. The exercises presented during the workshop are designed to support the client in reframing perspectives as
they see the presented situation from a different place in space where they are detached from it.

8.3. During the workshop, participants will learn to empower clients to take full responsibility for their actions resulting
from the exercises. This approach supports client autonomy.
